The Herbie movies started in 1969 and have since been followed up by five additional sequels. The initial movie was largely considered a success, grossing around $51 million at the domestic box office. The subsequent movies were lesser-known, but all in all, we’re also considered successful.
The Herbie was a big hit with audiences, spawning a string of sequels and spin-offs. But what are the Herbie movies and what is the best viewing order for films?
The Herbie movies in viewing order
As noted above, Herbie: The Love Bug was the first entry in the film series. The movie arrived in cinemas during Christmas 1968 and introduced characters such as Jim Douglas and Herbie car.
Hance, Herbie car struck a chord with audiences and proved to be box office. As such, a sequel was put into production, arriving in cinemas in 1974.
Herbie Rides Again proved to be another hit, so a third film was given the go-ahead. This next entry – Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo – was conceived as the third film in the series and was to continue to the story in three films.
Note: The movie – Disney’s The Love Bug – this movie was a remake of events of the previous film. However, it is a direct sequel to the previous films.

Because of its success, there were a number of sequels to the original movie, however, none of them kept the same characters. The first sequel in 1974 remained consistent with the production, but none of the actors stayed. The sequel followed by two more theatrical sequels, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo and Herbie Goes Bananas. A later another theatrical sequel, Herbie: Fully Loaded was released in 2005.
